Succulents are plants that store water in their fleshy leaves, stems and roots to withstand times of drought. They are beautiful and interesting, but are they easy to care for? Can you plant succulents in your garden here on the Olympic Peninsula? Will they withstand a cold winter? Do they really need less water than other plants?

Bob and his wife Debbie Harrison moved to Sequim 3 years ago. They are in the first post-Covid class of master gardeners, having their 12-week training entirely online. But they have roots in Tucson and the Sonoran Desert, were docents at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and are admitted cactus/succulent nuts. They are in charge of the succulent garden at Clallam County Master Gardeners’ Woodcock Demonstration Garden. Bob is a chemist, taught chemistry for two years in the U.S. Peace Corps in Africa, and worked a career in Arizona crime laboratories as a DNA analyst.
